THERE was a mild drama on Thursday when the Ogun State chapter of New Nigeria People’s Party petitioned the Assembly, asking it to impeach the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his Deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, over the allegation of abdication of duty.
This is as the governor returns from his trip to the United Kingdom on Thursday.
The opposition party said the governor allegedly failed to transmit a letter to the Assembly notifying it of his trip and also failing to hand over to his deputy.
The chairman of the party, Olaposi Oginni, who submitted the petition to the Assembly, with a copy obtained by our correspondent, asked the Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against Abiodun and Salako-Oyedele.
Oginni, however, addressed a press conference accusing Abiodun and his deputy of travelling out of the country without properly handing over.
Oginni insisted that both Abiodun and his deputy committed an impeachable offence and violated the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He disclosed that the party had petitioned the Assembly to impeach the governor for allegedly failing to transmit a letter to it notifying the House of his trip and also failing to hand over to his deputy.
Oginni vowed that the party would approach the court if the Assembly failed to impeach the duo.
He said, “We are therefore calling on the leadership of the Assembly and every member of the Assembly to do the needful by asking and making the governor to face the process of impeachment.”
